So what was SEO?

The term first came about in the mid 1990s when webmasters began asking search engines to crawl their sites in the hopes of getting them ranked.  The search engine algorithms were simple and many of those search engines actually used humans to index every site on the planet.  Shows you just how far we have come these days!

Getting great rankings used to be all about keyword spamming, the more often a certain keyword was on your site the higher you would be ranked in search engine results.  Sounds simple enough right? Well it was.

Back in the old ages of SEO there was a lot of search engine manipulation as most of the results were based on Meta tag keywording.  The problem with this is that webmasters can put whatever wording theyw anted in the Meta tags and it would remain invisible to the user.  What searchers ended up with was a whole bunch of results that were not relevant or applicable.

How as this issue alleviated? Well, for starters a search engine by the name of Google was being formed that relied on an algorithm to only use visible information and a page ranking system that would essentially weed out unnecessary results from searches performed.
